Just having a camera that says 'Nikon' or 'Cancun' etc. does not make someone a professional photographer. Unless you truly understand photographic equipment, don't waste too much time asking. Most people seem to think its important how many mega pixels a camera has but there are many other factors that are equally, if not more important!
The most important thing you should be concerned with, is that the photographer has back up equipment and that he knows how to use his/her camera to its best potential. There are quite a few photographers with 'old' equipment or cameras that look less flashy who take better photos than those with the latest high tech gear so don't be blinded by a huge lens and flashy equipment!
A good photographer knows his equipment, his or her camera's battery life, lighting equipment and how to use it and comes fully prepared for a photo shoot. The flashiest camera won't work if you are shooting in a remote location and you run out of batteries! The fastest Lamborghini won't go very fast unless you know how to drive it!
